The Dutch Weed Burger, one of many legendary items in the food industry in the Netherlands. Contrary to what most of you probably think of – this burger isn’t made with marihuana. We’re talking about seaweed, guys.
“The Dutch Weed Burger is one of the healthiest burgers on the planet, with seaweed as the key flavour maker. The juicy patty is made of briny soy shreds and Royal Kombu, a tasty and healthy winter weed, sustainably cultivated in the Dutch region of Zeeland. The crispy O-mega bun colours bright green, due to the superfood chlorella, a microalgae packed with nutritious proteins and Omega acids. The finishing taste touch is done by our Sea Sauce, enriched with Sea Lettuce, a fresh summer weed that brings a nice freshness to this healthy snack. The burger is vegetarian, vegan, kosher and halal.” – The website
I’ve been wanting to try this interesting object already for a while, but as the name already says – it’s not French. So pretty hard to get my hands on it here in France. I had to wait until I would have the opportunity when visiting home base. During my last trip in September I went to the restaurant Burgerz in The Hague, full of good courage to finally get a bite. Unfortunately they already ran out at the moment I ordered, so I had to go for one of their other vegetarian burgers. Not a bad turn of events in the end – I was ill, without a voice and my taste buds probably also not at their best.
A couple of weeks ago I gave it another shot. I visited my beloved friends in The Hague again and this time we would make sure I wouldn’t go back home without having tasted the Dutch Weed Burger! Take it easy, it didn’t require extreme measures. My friend just called Burgerz in advance to reserve a burger for me. I would definitely recommend you to do the same, when you are planning on having this special burger.
Knowing this time I wouldn’t be disappointed, we sat down in the restaurant with our empty stomaches. The staff kept their promise, one of their burgers was happily waiting to be devoured – BY ME.
I have to admit I felt pretty excited when I finally had this green coloured burger in front of me. Which tasted great, I must say. Only the bun was a bit dry, but overall it was a great burger. Nothing strange about the seaweed and sea lettuce, I actually think seaweed tastes delicious. It has so much flavour! As does the burger. I loved it. Something entirely different than a standard meat burger – since it’s fully plant based – but very, very tasty. The consistency of the patty is perfect, a bit moisty and with a great bite.
Probably even liked by a meat-eater in heart and soul.
My best friend Diepak also took a bite from my burger. His opinion is that it tasted pretty good, much better than expected from a green seaweed creature. He also thinks it’s very cool that a burger restaurant like Burgerz added a totally vegan burger like this on their menu. I agree on that!
Thinking and writing about the Dutch Weed Burger, I actually start craving another one. Such a shame I have to wait until I’m in the Netherlands again.
